The Kentucky Section Nets handle NTS traffic as part of our training, and all hams are encouraged to accept and originate message traffic. Handling NTS traffic is excellent training for passing messages in emergency situations. While most communications in an emergency are tactical, accuracy and clarity are attributes that are needed by communicators.

ARRL Numbered Radiograms. Numbered radiograms are used to keep messages brief and to improve accuracy; they are preceded by the prefix “ARL” followed by a number that is always spelled out in both phone and digital modes.

In emergency communications an operator should also become familiar with an ICS-213 Form and others.
